GreenLight Laser Therapy Offers BPH Symptom Relief
One of the most common health concerns for aging men is an enlarged prostate. Also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), this non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate affects more than half of all men over the age of 60. GreenLight Therapy is a new treatment now available at Memorial Healthcare which can provide these men with relief from symptoms such as frequent urination, weak flow and interrupted sleep.
GreenLight Laser Therapy uses a laser to remove prostate tissue. The laser treatment is delivered through a thin, flexible fiber, which is inserted into the urethra through an instrument called a cytoscope. The fiber carries laser energy which quickly removes prostate tissue. The tissue removal will allow urine to pass through freely. Natural urine flow is rapidly restored and urinary symptoms are quickly relieved in most patients. Typically within 24 hours of the procedure most patients experience very rapid relief of symptoms and a dramatic improvement in urine flow. However, medical history, your health condition an other factors can influence treatment and recovery.
Before the GreenLight procedure, which is conducted in the hospital setting, your doctor will discuss anesthesia requirements, as well as pain medication to ensure your comfort during and after the procedure. Most patients can resume normal activities within a couple of days and can usually resume strenuous activity within two weeks.
